Allakhazam’s class guide sums the enchanter up as a mind-bending caster with superb support magic and a few pet options, the best class at making emergencies easy to handle and at helping allied casters deal more damage.

What an enchanter does
Enchanters are the subtlest casters, doing little direct damage but having a huge effect on the world around them. They wear cloth and wield blunt weapons and daggers.
They strengthen their allies’ minds, with unmatched mana regeneration and mental enhancements. Haste is their specialty too, greatly speeding up their group’s attacks. They also master illusion and can take the form of many creatures and races.
In battle, enchanters bring order to chaos and often save fights that would otherwise be lost. They mesmerize enemies to take them out of the fight for a while, slow monsters’ attacks dramatically, and in many situations charm a monster to fight for them.
The official text says enchanters often need a group to reach their potential, and suit players who like taking charge of hard situations.

The epic: Staff of the Serpent
Epic quests came to EverQuest in September 2000, shortly after The Ruins of Kunark. They were modelled on the paladin’s Fiery Avenger quest: long, multi-step journeys through the highest-level dungeons, usually needing groups to kill powerful creatures. Each ended in a unique weapon with its own model and particle effects. The enchanter’s reward was the Staff of the Serpent, with the effect Speed of the Shissar.
Who could be one
In the classic era recreated by Project 1999, the enchanter epic could be used by Human, Erudite, High Elf, Dark Elf, Gnome. The Iksar appear there because they joined with The Ruins of Kunark.

Titles
After level 50, each class earns titles that show in /who. A enchanter became a Illusionist at 51, a Beguiler at 55 and a Phantasmist at 60.

Playing an enchanter today
The class is still in the game on Daybreak’s live and time-locked progression servers. Project 1999 recreates the Classic, Kunark and Velious eras, so it has the original fourteen classes. See EverQuest Today for where the game stands now.
