Allakhazam’s class guide sums the magician up as a summoner of four types of powerful elemental pets, with strong damage spells and some support magic, particularly strong in single-group content and able to solo.

What a magician does

Magicians are master summoners who call elemental pets to serve them and conjure useful items out of thin air. They wear cloth and wield blunt weapons and daggers.

Elemental pets are at the heart of a magician’s offense and go with them everywhere, protecting their master and adding powerful attacks and special abilities. Magicians back them up with a large selection of fire and magic damage spells.

They can summon food, weapons, armor and magical jewelry. In battle they can wrap their whole group in a shield of fire that burns anything that strikes them, and lower a monster’s resistance to magic.

The official text calls magicians a focused class, giving up some variety for power in their specialty, and good for players who enjoy managing a powerful pet.

The epic: Orb of Mastery

Epic quests came to EverQuest in September 2000, shortly after The Ruins of Kunark. They were modelled on the paladin’s Fiery Avenger quest: long, multi-step journeys through the highest-level dungeons, usually needing groups to kill powerful creatures. Each ended in a unique weapon with its own model and particle effects. The magician’s reward was the Orb of Mastery, with the effect Manifest Elements.

Who could be one

In the classic era recreated by Project 1999, the magician epic could be used by Human, Erudite, High Elf, Dark Elf, Gnome. The Iksar appear there because they joined with The Ruins of Kunark.

Titles

After level 50, each class earns titles that show in /who. A magician became a Elementalist at 51, a Conjurer at 55 and a Arch Mage at 60.

Playing a magician today

The class is still in the game on Daybreak’s live and time-locked progression servers. Project 1999 recreates the Classic, Kunark and Velious eras, so it has the original fourteen classes. See EverQuest Today for where the game stands now.
