Kerafyrm the Awakened

Our Kerafyrm, the Sleeper page tells the night he woke. Secrets of Faydwer, in 2007, told what he did next.

Regret in the Necropolis

Long before he woke, the dead were already asking for it. In the Dragon Necropolis the shade of Jaled Dar begs mortals to set Kerafyrm free: “You must wake The Sleeper. He is our salvation, he will restore a new golden age to Norrath. It was a terrible mistake to subdue him, jealousy and envy led us to do it.” He calls Kerafyrm “the best of us, what we should be.” In the Sleeper’s Tomb, Jobana Du-Ata says that Kildrukaun, oldest of the ancients, at first spoke against creating a prismatic dragon at all, insisting that Veeshan herself would have to approve.

Awake

Then he was free. In the Western Wastes, Melalafen spoke for the dragons who had hidden and waited: “It was he who was sleeping. It is he who is now freed.” Skyshrine answered with four Crusaders of Veeshan, elemental dragons “bred to be champions” who devoted their lives to putting him back to sleep, and Grendish mourned that centuries of sacrifice to keep him imprisoned now seemed to have been for nothing.

A world gone wrong

Kerafyrm, mightiest of the prismatic dragons, feels the world has drifted from what Veeshan intended. As the black dragon Kildrukaun prophesied, he believes the time has come to act: Norrath must belong to dragonkind again. He means to remake it under his own laws, keeping only the creatures he needs to begin again.

The Old Disciples

While he lay in the Sleeper’s Tomb, his followers had built a keep at Crystallos as a gathering place for all who serve him. Four ancient dragons loyal to him oversaw the work: Kildrukaun the black prophet, Tjudawos the golden arch mage, Zeixshi-Kar the silver general, and Vyskudra the storm dragon. Dragons, wurms, wyverns, drakes and golems guard it, and any follower who helps defend it is welcome. Its main defence is a barrier made of energy stolen from the four elemental planes, tuned to dragonkin, which throws back any not loyal to Kerafyrm. Mortals, with the right preparation, might slip through.

The prismatic brood

Once he woke, his followers brought him to Crystallos to recover the strength he had lost in prison. He learned to coat objects, ground and buildings in his essence with a special breath that leaves a prismatic sheen. His goal is the destruction of all non-dragon life on Norrath, and he plans to breathe on his followers’ eggs to make them his own, the brood of a new age. Their keeper is a dragon called only the Broodmother, her mind so warped by his power that she lives only to guard them. He knows war is coming, and this time he does not intend to be stopped.

A question left open

Even his parentage stayed a secret. In 2012 an EverQuest II developer was asked whether the cursed dragon Dozekar was Kerafyrm’s father, and replied: “That would be telling.”

Where the sources disagree

Fan sources tie Kerafyrm’s awakening to an attack on the Claws of Veeshan and the ruin of the Western Wastes. The official Secrets of Faydwer text only says he woke and was led to Crystallos, so we leave the rest to the Sleeper’s Tomb page and its sources.
