Morell-Thule, Lord of Dreams

Terris-Thule gave Norrath its nightmares. Her brother gives it everything else you see when you sleep.

King of Dreams

Morell-Thule rules the Demi-Plane of Dreams and gives sleep its colour and texture. He makes the creatures that play in his realm, animates them, and plainly enjoys them. He is discordant good, the outcast son of Cazic-Thule, and he often stands against his sister Terris-Thule, Queen of Nightmares.

What he looks like

He stands nearly seven feet tall, handsome and youthful, with the body of a pure white centaur and the tail of a lion. His silver hooves sparkle in the light of a unicorn-like horn on his brow, a horn “not made of hair as with most such protuberances, but… purely a thing of light.” His long hair runs down his spine into a glistening white mane, setting off pale skin and bright green eyes.

The frogloks’ secret father

His great deed was done in secret. When Terris-Thule crept into the dreams of the captive Mithaniel Marr and stole the gift of life from his body, Morell noticed, “for while Terris is the Queen of Nightmares, Morell is the King of Dreams,” as From Pond to Paladin, Vol. II has it. He moved against her and scattered the stolen gift across the swamps of Norrath, and from it the first frogloks arose. That is why Mithaniel counts him an ally.

A god gone wrong

Classic players met him only at second hand, and what they heard was alarming. In the Planes of Power quest The Staff Retreat, Twereus Ulithain says: “A sinister shadow has fallen across the world, and across the planes. I have ventured long to meet the god Morell Thule, yet having sacrificed so much to finally make his acquaintance, I was shocked at what I found.” He had prayed to Morell all his life, and now found him deranged: Morell spoke “as if he were master of more than dreams,” his powers swollen with some essence he had absorbed. Only when Twereus was begging for his life did the god spare him.

The Staff of Arcane Dispossession

Twereus had a cure from the future. A tome found through Zebuxoruk’s void portals described ways to alter godlike beings, and he set adventurers to gather the parts of a staff that could strip the stolen essence away: the Rings of Insight, a Gem of Planar Teleportation, an Adamantine Tube taken from the pirate Gaitius Cloden, the Rod of the Sandmen, and a Pure Dream Fragment, “a chunk of raw living magic, naturally attuned to Morell’s lifeforce.” His last warning was the heart of it: “you are not trying to destroy him… One god has already been destroyed in this place, that is how this whole dilemma began!”

Sanctum Somnium

In 2010 his realm finally became a place you could visit. House of Thule opened Sanctum Somnium, the centre of the Plane of Dreams, where he oversees all that happens in our subconscious and has collected the manifestations of our dreams, things that should be familiar yet somehow are not. It is “the source of fantasy itself,” where time and space reshape easily and nightmares dwell too. Morell keeps his rooms at the top of the tallest tower, directing the dreams and nightmares of mortals, while his servants tend the lower floors alongside the unfortunate few trapped in their dreams.

A castle and a captive father

Morell’s Castle looks like a normal structure from outside. Inside it reflects its master, its halls malleable and shifting to suit whoever lives there, and its influence leaks into the lands around it as displaced interiors where they should not be. Deeper still lay his boldest work. In Fear Itself, Cazic-Thule is “quite enjoying his dream,” a reality in which he reigns supreme over every foe, and the preview notes he is probably feeling a little fatherly pride: “it isn’t everyone who can trap the god of fear in a dream.” Adventurers had to wake him.

How much is known

He remains one of the thinner gods in the written record, with only about fifteen texts to his name, and this page tells no more than they do.

Where the sources disagree

Official previews spell the name both “Morell” and “Morrell.”

The Plane of Sky’s official description says Veeshan is rumoured to sleep with her mind held safe in Morell-Thule’s realm of dreams. Nothing in Morell’s own lore that we found confirms it.
