Taelosia & Mata Muram

Gates of Discord and Omens of War were brutal raid years. They began with one mage nobody believed.

Calliav’s visions

A mage named Calliav Giniuar foresaw a great dark land across the stormy Abysmal Sea, and an army waiting there: the Legion of Mata Muram. His ravings were written down, and his creatures were sketched by torchlight by a painter after he woke from his visions. People called him a madman, again.

The Aneuk

Among the things he saw were the Aneuk, the legion’s priests, from a world of pure magic, channelling a god of darkness unlike anything on Norrath and able to cause as much harm as they could heal. Their legs had withered after centuries of levitating, so they wore glyph-covered armour hung with the skulls of kings they had conquered. When the legion came for their world it had offered a choice, die or join, and many had chosen to join.

The Queen of Thorns

The Wayfarers Brotherhood believed him enough to sail. They took the great ship Queen of Thorns across the Abysmal Sea and found a continent ringed by storms. Calliav had believed the Grozmok Stone would act as a compass, and it did; following it, one scout reported, was a terrible journey that ended in a safe harbour on the continent’s west side.

The dark amulet

Aboard the Queen of Thorns, Calliav dreamed again. In a temple full of the corpses of fallen heroes he watched the rogue Morden Rasp creep toward the leader of the Muramites, a creature of fierce chaotic energy. It clutched an amulet, seemed to speak with someone through it, and laid it on an altar, and the stone pulsed with a sickly dark glow that swallowed the light. When Calliav reached for it, his hand passed through.

A land already broken

When adventurers reached the Wayfarers’ ship, Fezbin Fizzles explained that “odd events with Calliav” had guided the Brotherhood to the continent they named Taelosia. It was a land that had “suffered through a great magical explosion,” and its native people were in dire straits. Taminoa Bialu gathered the scouts’ reports from the city region, and the newspapers reported that the Brotherhood’s leaders, Morden Rasp and Tondal Di’Xevar, had set out for Taelosia’s highest temples. In Kod’Taz, Tublik Narwethar sends adventurers to a temple the Muramites destroyed in their first invasion, while sparing the other three, for reasons no one knew.

Orders from the legion

Captured Muramite documents revealed an army with plans beyond Norrath. Commander Grigar orders that any riftseeker found alone outside its borders be detained and brought to Anguish for questioning, “directly from Mata Muram himself.” In another note Mata Muram tells his elite ikaav to master the riftseekers’ paths between worlds, so that the legion can move on and keep building an army “for my legion and superiors.” A Wayfarer scholar studying the rune-etched scales of Muramite armour began to suspect the scales were organic, and on the Abysmal Sea Alexsa Whyte reported that each race of the legion resisted some weapons and was weak to others.
