Lord Nagafen & Lady Vox

For many of us they were the first dragons we ever raided. Nobody told us in 1999 that they were in love.

The young strategist

Nagafen is the youngest of the ancient dragons; even Lady Vox is older. He won favour in the dragon courts as a fighter and strategist, and his advice lay behind the destruction of the iksar navy, though he did not join Trakanon’s attack. In the war that followed, Jaled Dar respectfully kept him as an adviser rather than a commander.

A forbidden affair

After Jaled Dar died and Trakanon retreated to Old Sebilis, Nagafen fell for Lady Vox, a cherished priestess of Veeshan. The Dragon Lords discovered the affair just after it was consummated and pursued the pair to Antonica. They bound Vox with powerful magic in the fortress of Permafrost, drove Nagafen into the Lavastorm Mountains and sealed him deep inside Solusek’s Eye behind wards he could not break. Then, draconic justice done, they left.

Waiting

Nagafen began planning his escape at once. Over the centuries the fire giants nearby, the Krombral, came to revere him as a leader and forced the Eye’s other creatures into line, while he studied the Eye’s power and bent it to build ever stronger guardians. Only the Krombral still clearly remember his arrival; the other races have turned it into myth. The kobolds guard their part of the lair fiercely, “mindful of their duties to Lord Nagafen.”

Deep in his chamber lies the Heart of Fire, the artifact the gnomes of the Solusek Mining Company search for. It is real: a grotto inside the lava of his cave holds an orb of lava far hotter than the ordinary kind.

The egg

Then word came through the Cyth that Vox had laid an egg, and that it would not hatch in Permafrost. Nagafen does not believe that is a coincidence. Only the harshest conditions can stop a dragon’s egg from hatching, so Veeshan herself must be holding the child until it can be brought to him and changed by the power of Solusek’s Eye.

A son greater than Kerafyrm

His plan is vast. Changed by the destructive forces of the Eye and raised by “a most attendant and determined father,” the child would surpass even Kerafyrm in physical and magical power. With that godlike son, Nagafen and Vox would take their revenge on the Dragon Lords, then cleanse Norrath of the lesser races and reclaim it for the Wurmqueen.

On the servers

Mortals kept getting in the way. Vox was raided as often as Nagafen; one player account from the Tribunal server describes the Tribunal Council guild alliance killing her in a fight of about two minutes, interrupting the Complete Heal she began just before she fell.

Exiled Ones, now free

The later ages remember them. The Ring of Scale, The Age of Turmoil says, watched bemused as mortals kept trying to destroy Vox and Nagafen, and so missed that the old enemy’s land was being rediscovered. The Age of Destiny calls them “the Exiled Ones who created a force of destruction that could barely be contained,” and ends: “It is known that they are now free.”

In EverQuest II’s timeline their end came by dragon claw. Three Drakota killed Vox in her lair, while five more, led by Aurraxius, attacked Nagafen. Najena’s guardians wounded one, and Nagafen killed Aurraxius and tore off his translocation ring.

Where the sources disagree

Where is Nagafen’s prison? This lore says the Dragon Lords drove him into the Lavastorm Mountains and sealed him inside Solusek’s Eye. In the game his lair is its own zone, Nagafen’s Lair, which Allakhazam lists separately from Solusek’s Eye.

EverQuest II lore says three Drakota killed Vox in her lair and five more attacked Nagafen; that belongs to the later timeline.
